ACS National Board of Directors
Kathy Zagzebski has been a member of ACS since 1996. She served on
the board of the San Francisco Chapter for several years, and also
on the National board as San Francisco Chapter Delegate. Kathy is
the President and Executive Director of the National Marine Life
Center, in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. Previously, Kathy was the
Manager of Strandings at The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito,
California, the largest marine mammal hospital in the U.S. She has
also volunteered for the Kewalo Basin Marine Mammal Laboratory in
Hawaii, the Marine Mammal Stranding Network on the east coast, and
several dolphin watch projects.

Mason Weinrich is a marine researcher and Executive Director of The Whale Center of New England in Gloucester, Massachusetts, a preeminent research institution that has sponsored field-based studies in New England for 25 years. He has worked with humpback whales on the East Coast since 1980 and has served on the ACS Board since 1983 as Member-at-Large, Research Chair, Vice President, and President.

Cindy Rustanius, CPA, has had her own CPA firm for 20 years and earned her master's degree in taxation from USC. She just completed over 10 years of serving as treasurer on the board of the nonprofit, Catalina Island Performing Arts Foundation. Cindy is currently on the board of the South Bay Estate Planning Council. Previously she has volunteered on the boards of South Bay Free Clinic and American Woman's Society of CPA's. She is intently interested in our earth and environment.
Jonathan Stern has studied minke whales since 1980. He has also conducted research on killer, pilot, fin, humpback and gray whales as well as
bottlenose dolphins. He has Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Biology and a Ph.D. in Wildlife and Fisheries Science. In addition to field work, he uses computer models to investigate a variety of ecological questions. He first got interested in whales at the age of 8, when his father's ship was struck and its rudder disabled by a whale, about 500 miles from Australia.
Katherine Sardi is an ACS member-at-large and has been the national board's research chair since 2001. She is a senior biologist in the Rescue and Rehabilitation Department at the New England Aquarium in Boston, MA. Prior to starting at the Aquarium, she was the Assistant Director of the Whale Center of New England in Gloucester, MA. She has a B.S. in marine and freshwater biology from the University of New Hampshire and a Master's degree in marine biology from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
Patty Geary became a board member for the Los Angeles Chapter of ACS
in May 2001 and has served on the National Board since January 2002.
She has volunteered in the Los Angeles Chapter's Whalewatch program
for 5 years. She has been actively involved in animal causes for 14
years. She lives in Gaithersburg, Maryland, works at Trader Joe's and
brings a wealth of enthusiasm and community resources from her
professional management experience, which includes 30 years in the
restaurant/retail industry
Katie Garrison
began her involvement with ACS and the Los Angeles Chapter, in 1998, via the Whalewatch Program. Katie successfully completed many seasons in this naturalist training program and also joined the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Chapter. She has served as VP, and Sales/Events Chair managing sales and education at environmental fairs and festivals around the southern California region. She has also served as the chapter delegate to the ACS National Board. Past volunteer participation includes Earthwatch marine mammal study projects, and monitoring pinnipeds on the beaches of Del Norte and Humboldt Counties for the Northcoast Marine Mammal Center. Katie has a B.S. in Marine Biology and Zoology.
Bernardo Alps is a staff photographer for the San Gabriel Valley Newspaper Group in Los Angeles. He became Trips Chair in April 2002 and is an expert naturalist with in-depth knowledge of birds and cetaceans. In addition to serving as President of the Los Angeles Chapter since 1997, he has been a volunteer naturalist for the Whalewatch Program since 1993 and has served on its advisory board since 1994. He organizes the Photo Contest at our conferences and serves as naturalist for trips sponsored by ACS, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, the Los Angeles Audubon Society and Condor Cruises.
Diane Allen has been an ACS member since 2001 and is active with the Puget Sound Chapter in addition to National. Her publishing & computer experience extends back into the early 70's; with microcomputer business software development projects from the late 70's to the 90's; a switch to networking in the early 90's, and then to web work in the late 90's. She believes that our natural environment and the critters which inhabit it have intrinsic value, that we, as free and fortunate human beings, have a duty to protect our cetacean friends; and that the best way to do so is via public education. Her current other nonprofit involvement includes local chapters of AAUW, Soroptimist, Team Survivor, and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Barbara Bennett was introduced to ACS in 1990 when she became a volunteer naturalist through the ACS/LA project, Cabrillo Whalewatch. This training has opened many doors for Barbara, including a project for the Alaska Native Heritage Center, as well as her current job as a naturalist lecturing to cruise ship passengers touring Alaskan waters. With a strong support for public outreach, she feels she can fill an important role as an ACS Board Member. Barbara has also joined the
Alaska Southcentral marine mammal stranding network. With a

Jerry Loomis has been involved with ACS for about 22 years including several terms as President of the Monterey Bay Chapter. He retired after 27 years of experience as a Park Ranger and Diving Safety Officer with the State Parks Department. In addition to being a dedicated ACS volunteer, he is still active as a commercial diver and marine naturalist.
Wellington Rogers joined ACS in 1978 and has been an Orange County Member ever since. He has served the Orange County Chapter as Sales Director, Vice President, and is currently chapter Webmaster. . Wellington taught marine biology at Lakewood High School for twenty years, retiring from teaching in 1988.
Uko Gorter, born in Amhem, Netherlands, was a professional ballet dancer for 17 years. He settled in Redmond, WA with his wife and is a principal character artist for the Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle. He is currently a freelance illustrator specializing in natural history illustrations, particularly marine mammals. In addition to serving as Puget Sound's national delegate, Uko is the chapter President and has provided almost all of the illustrations for the ACS national web site.

Michelle Berman attended her first ACS meeting (Monterey Bay Chapter) in 1995 while she was a Colorado State undergraduate participating in an internship at Moss Landing Marine Labs. She moved to Florida and studied Steller Sea Lions for her Master's degree before taking up residence in Santa Barbara and re-activating the ACS chapter there. She is Chapter Delegate and President and works at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History where she is currently Assistant Curator of Vertebrate Zoology and the marine mammal stranding coordinator for the area.
